If you’re on vacation or traveling to Albany, NY, with your family, there are many activities to do in the area. There are options that are fun for both kids and adults! It’s always nice to make memories in different places.
The best family activities in the area are events, concerts, sightseeing tours, the track, amusement parks, adventure parks, parks, rock climbing, roller skating, museums, miniature golf and fun day trips.
If you’re interested in going to an event or concert with your family, check out the schedules of the Times Union Center, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Palace Theatre and Park Playhouse (summer only). For sporting events, the TUC has Albany Devils hockey games and Siena College basketball games. The Tri-City ValleyCats games (minor league baseball) take place in the summer on HVCC campus in Troy. Some of the games end with a firework show!
If you’re visiting Albany in the summer, Saratoga Race Track is a very popular place to go with a group. You can bring your own food, cooler, chairs and even a table and just hang out for the day! Those who are old enough can bet on the horses. There are also plenty of food and beverage options to choose from there.
Going to an amusement park is also a fun activity for all ages. A few of the best ones are Hoffman’s Playland (geared more towards children) and The Great Escape, which is in Lake George. Lake George also has Water Slide World.
At a park, you can have a picnic, take a walk, go on a bike ride, roller blade, run, etc. Some of the best parks in the area to do these activities are Lincoln Park, Washington Park and The Crossings of Colonie.
Albany’s Indoor Rockgym has routes available for all difficulties and they’re open all year round. Admission is $12 per person and equipment rental is $6.50 per person.
If you want to get out of the sun or the cold weather and visit a museum, the top two in the area are the New York State Museum and Albany Institute of History and Art. At both places, their exhibits often change, so every time you go you’ll probably see something different!
Great for Groups
Indoor miniature golf and laser tag can both be done at Crossgates Mall in Albany. The mall also has hundreds of stores, a movie theater, food court and restaurants.
If you’re looking for outdoor miniature golf, I recommend Funplex Fun Park. Funplex has batting cages, go-karts, basketball, water wars, bumper boats, a rock wall and more. And they have ice cream on site!
A great place for roller skating is Guptill’s Arena, which is in Latham. Admission is $7 and skate rental is $3. It’s a great place to have a birthday party!
There are a ton of awesome family day trip ideas for when you travel to Albany. Some of the best are Saratoga, Lake George, Jiminy Peak, Howe Caverns, Cooperstown, outlet shopping, Grafton Lakes State Park and New York City.
Saratoga is always hopping in the summer months. The track, casino & raceway, speedway, restaurants and shops are all very popular and you can definitely spend a nice day here. It’s about 30 miles from Albany.
Lake George is a fun village to visit in the summer. The lake alone offers so many activities and they also have great waterfront dining and shops. They have miniature golf and a few amusement/water parks! They also have specialty cruises such as a moonlight or fireworks cruise. It’s about 50 miles from Albany.
Jiminy Peak is a great place to go to all year round. It has all of the fun winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding and they have a bunch of things to do in the summer, spring and fall as well. The Alpine Slide allows you to go at your own pace through tunnels, dips and curves. They also have a mountain coaster, a giant swing, a scenic ride in a 6 person chairlift, rock climbing wall, bungy trampoline, bouncy bounce, kid climb, mountain biking and hiking. For some of the activities children need to be at least 48 inches tall. Jiminy is about 36 miles from Albany.
Howe Caverns is a great family activity because there’s so much to do here as well as nearby. It’s about 35 miles from Albany. You can take a guided tour 156 feet below the Earth’s surface and explore an underground cavern that’s 6 million years old.
The 90 minute tour consists of walking and a boat ride and the admission is $23 for ages 16-64, $20 for seniors, $19 for ages 12-15, $12 for ages 5-11 and free for kids 4 and under.
Around this area is also the Secret Caverns which has 100 foot underground waterfalls, Gobbler’s Knob Family Fun Park, Schoharie Valley Farms, The Old Stone Fort Museum Complex, 1743 Palatine House and more! All of these places are great for families and provide educational fun.
Cooperstown is about 68 miles from Albany and is the perfect destination for baseball lovers. The National Baseball Hall of Fame, Doubleday Field, Ommegang Brewery, The Farmers’ Museum and kayaking or just a few of the activities that can be done here.
If you’re looking for some great outlet shopping the top two places to do that around here are Lee Premium Outlets and Woodbury Commons. Lee is located in Massachusetts about 50 miles from Albany and Woodbury is about 2 hours from Albany. They both have a large selection of stores.
Grafton Lakes State Park is a popular place near Albany in the summer because it offers swimming, sunbathing, fishing, boating, hiking, picnicking, volleyball and more. You can bring your own food or buy something there. Long Pond has a large sandy beach. The only thing you have to pay for is parking. In the winter visitors can snowmobile, snowshoe, cross country ski, ice skate or ice fish here. Grafton is only about 26 miles from Albany.
New York City is about 4 hours from Albany and you can either drive there, take the train or take a bus. There are a million things to do in NYC such as seeing a Broadway play, a Yankee Game or going to an event at Madison Square Garden. The options are endless!
